Construction Terms Terminology

Foundation Terms

Bull Float
Bull float is tool that is used to level concrete after it has initially
been poured.  It is put together in sections. On the lower, a
three-foot surface is attached and is used to scrape excess
concrete off and smooth it as it begins to dry and set up.  

Grade Beam
Grade beam is a term used to refer to interior beams in a
foundation.  These beams are normally under interior walls some
being weight bearing and some not.
Organic Matter
Organic matter is considered to be living or dead decaying matter
such as grass, weeds, tree roots, etc. This material needs to be
removed before placing any footing or foundation

Form Nails
Form nails are specific type nails that are used in foundation and
form work.  These nails have two heads, which make it easy to
pull out at a later date and either reuse or discard at that time.

Wire Mesh
Wire mesh is a term used to refer to reinforcement wire that is
used in concrete foundations.  This is normally a #10 gauge wire.
The squares are normally 5"x5" and the roll is normally 5 Ft. wide.
 The rolls are 150 ft long and are usually used in residential-type
construction.  Wire mesh can also come in mats, which will be a
heavier gauge and is used in either commercial-type or road
foundations.

Floating Form
Floating Form is a horizontal form in a residential foundation or
commercial foundation.  This form is used to hold back concrete
and before the concrete is set-up, it is pulled in order to finish the
edges.  Places where this might be used would be an interior
garage or porch step-up.

Construction Jargon
Concrete Pump
Concrete Pump is a truck, which is equipped with a pump that is used to pump concrete to hard to
reach foundations or constructions sites.

Pump Mix
Pump Mix refers to the type mix which is required in order to be able to pump concrete through a
concrete pump and hose.  This mix normally has gravel, which is smaller in size and greater in
quantity than a normal concrete mix.
Retaining Wall
Retaining Wall is a vertical wall, which is constructed in order to hold back existing earth or back fill
that will be put in at a later date.

Screed
Screed is board or long piece of square aluminum tubing that is used to screed off excess
concrete across a foundation.  The screed will be placed on form boards or other devices on each
side of the foundation and brought across in order to screed off excess concrete. This will leave a
flat and level surface.

Sleeve
Sleeve is a term used to refer to either a metal or plastic cylinder placed in the bottom of footings
to allow conduit or other pipes to pass.  The sleeve is necessary in order to be able to replace at a
later date and also to maintain the integrity of the footing.

Cubic Yard
Cubic Yard is a term used to refer to a specific volume measurement. A cubic yard is 3 feet wide, 3
feet in length and 3 feet in depth. The total volume of a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Concrete and
fill dirt are two common items that are measured in cubic yards.
