Bird Box
Bird Box is a term used to refer the triangular box that is
normally on the end of a gabled roof.
Bottom Plate
Bottom Plate is the bottom 2x4 or 2x6 plate that is normally put
down first in the framing process.  This bottom plate normally
on a concrete foundation is treated material
Ceiling Joist
Ceiling Joist are the horizontal members that make up the
ceiling and the house.  They can be anywhere from a 2x6 up
to a 2x12, depending on the structure and whether there is a
floor up above.
Gable
Gable refers to a type of roof that ends in a triangle type
structure at the end of the house
Heel
Heel refers to the shortest end of a cut. When cutting rafters
the vertical cuts at the top and bottom are cut on the pitch of
the roof. The short end of this cut is called the heel
Linear
Linear is a term used to refer to the linear footage or the
running footage of a piece of lumber or measurement.
Square
Square is term used to refer to where the building meets in
90° angles in the corners.   In order for the framing and
everything that follows to be correct is very important that the
building is square in every corner
 
Construction Jargon
Subfloor
Subfloor refers to the first laying of flooring that is put on a
wood flooring system, whether it is on the first or second floor.
 This floor is used in order to create a surface for the finished
floor, whether it is carpet or some sort of vinyl flooring
Hurricane Clips
Hurricane Clips are small metal clips that are normally nailed
from the top plate to the edge to the side of the rafter in order
to hold a rafter to the top plates.  This is very important in
certain parts of the country in order to tie or create a system
that is all tied together.
Cripple
Cripple is a vertical member normally above a header or
below a window seal that is used to create an opening
Corner Brace
Corner Brace refers to braces that are normally put on
corners of the houses.  This can either be a solid sheet of
plywood or let-in braces or some type of metal straps
Bird Mouth
Bird Mouth is a triangular cut that is made in a rafter to create
a notch to set on a top plate of a wall.
Overhang
Overhang is a term that is used to express the extension of
the roof past the vertical edge of the wall
