Punch List
Punch List is a list of items that need to be completed before a
house or project would be considered to be finished.
Black In
Black In refers to the term that means when a building is
actually dried in and ready for other mechanical installation
inside the house.   Normally at this stage, the roof has felt and
the walls are sheeted and protected as far as moisture or
weather.
Collar Beam
Collar Beam is normally a 1x6 or 2x6 horizontal member up in
the ridge of a roof.  The collar beam is used to strengthen and
tie both sides of the roof together extending from rafter to
rafter below the ridge
Furr Out
Furr Out is a term that is used to refer to the act of nailing
strips on existing vertical or horizontal member in order to
extend the width or depth of the wall or ceiling.
On Center
On Center refers to whether the spacing in the floor joist or
wall system is 16" or 24" on the center.  This would be the
measurement from the center of each individual piece of
lumber
Stick Built
Stick Built refers to actually building and installing piece of
lumber in a house starting from scratch
 
Construction Jargon
Bottom chord
Bottom chord refers to the bottom of horizontal member of a
truss system
Cornice
Cornice refers to the exterior trim on the outside of a house
Glulam
Glulam refers to a process of creating a laminated beam by
gluing laminates together to produce a specified type beam of
size and length.
Fire Block
Fire Block are horizontal or vertical members used to install
between studs or attic bracing.  Purpose of the fire block is to
act as a draft stop in case of fire to prevent fire from
spreading to other parts or up into the attic.
Subfloor
Subfloor refers to the first laying of flooring that is put on a
wood flooring system, whether it is on the first or second
floor.  This floor is used in order to create a surface for the
finished floor, whether it is carpet or some sort of vinyl
flooring
